Abuses to Life Processes (part 1)

Salam readers! Happy New Year! :) It's been a while since my last post. I apologize for that. So...my first post for 2013..."Abuses to Life Processes"...I shall divide this topic into two parts. Part 1 will focus on Drug and Part 2 will be on Alcohol and Smoking. At the end of the lesson, I will include some photos of my students' projects from last year. Oops! I know this is waaaaaaaaay overdue but I decide to post this together since I'm teaching this topic too at school this week.

DRUG

I'm sure you've heard this word before but what is it really? How does it work in our body? Drug. Drug is any substance which, when taken into the  body, has an effect on the way the body and brain work. 

There are two types of drugs:
(1) Useful drugs             (2) Harmful drugs



USEFUL DRUGS





  • Useful drug is also known as medicinal drug. It is a chemical substance used to cure or prevent diseases or sickness.
  • E.g. of medicinal drugs: antibiotics, antacids and painkillers.

  • Antibiotics
         - Used to fight diseases caused by bacteria such as tuberculosis (TB), cholera and pneumonia. 

          -E.g. of antibiotic is penicillin.

     
  •  Antacids
        -   Used to cure indigestion, by neutralizes the excess acid in the stomach.



     
  • Painkillers 
    -Used to relieve pain.
    -E.g. of painkillers are paracetemol and aspirin.
     
  • Misuse of medicinal drugs:
  1. Medicine can be DANGEROUS to the body if they taken in the wrong way. 
  2. ALWAYS FOLLOW the instructions given by a doctor and read the directions on the label carefully before taking any medicine.   



HARMFUL DRUGS
A harmful drug is a chemical substance which, when taken into the body produce harmful effects such as change in character, mood or behavior.


E.g. of harmful drugs: morphine, heroin, cannabis and sport drug


 MORPHINE

 
-Powerful painkiller which, when taken too much is harmful.


HEROIN

-It is dangerous and can kill.


HARMFUL EFFECTS OF MORPHINE AND HEROIN

  •         Addicts become tired. 
  •         Addicts lose their appetite. 
  •         Once addicted, they need to take more and more of it. 
  •         It is usually injected into the blood using syringe and needle. (when infected needles are shared between drug addicts, diseases such as HIV and hepatitis are spread)


HARMFUL EFFECTS OF CANNABIS (MARIJUANA)

  •         Headaches
  •         Damages to the muscles and the lungs
  •         Difficult to remember and think
  •         Causes brain damage if used for a long time
   SPORTS DRUGS
  - Make us stronger and faster

  - E.g. of sports drugs are dianabol (used to increase muscle 
    size and body weight) and steroids.
